Badminton Doubles: 8 Tips to Dominate with Your Partner

Master doubles positioning, communication, and attack patterns to become an unstoppable pair on the court.

Badminton Stats Team

Doubles badminton is a completely different game from singles. It's faster, more aggressive, and relies heavily on teamwork. Here are 8 tips to dominate with your partner.

1. Master the Two Formations

Attack Formation (Front-Back)

When your pair is attacking, one player stands at the front (net) and one at the back (smashing). The front player intercepts weak returns, while the back player maintains pressure with smashes and drops.

Defense Formation (Side-by-Side)

When defending, both players stand side by side, each covering half the court. This maximizes your court coverage against smashes and fast shots.

2. Communication is Everything

Call "mine" or "yours" for every shuttle that lands between you. The middle of the court (the "channel") is where most doubles points are lost due to confusion. Establish clear rules — e.g., forehand player takes the middle.

3. Serve Short and Tight

In doubles, the low serve to the T (center of the service line) is king. A high serve gives your opponents an easy smash. Practice serving just over the net with a flat trajectory.

4. Attack the Middle

Hit between your opponents to create confusion about who should take the shot. The middle of the court is the most effective target in doubles — it reduces their angles and forces split-second decisions.

5. Rotate Smoothly

When you switch from defense to attack (or vice versa), rotate naturally:

  • If you hit a good net shot, stay at the front — your partner drops back
  • If you lift the shuttle, move to a side-by-side position
  • Always fill the space your partner leaves
  • 6. Drive Fast and Flat

In doubles, flat drives (fast shots parallel to the net) are more effective than high clears. They give opponents less time to set up smashes. Practice forehand and backhand drives extensively.

    7. Dominate the Net

The pair that controls the net controls the rally. Practice tight net shots, net kills, and quick pushes. When you're at the net, stay low with your racket up, ready to pounce.

    8. Play to Each Other's Strengths

If one player has a better smash, set them up with lifts to their side. If one is faster at the net, let them take the front more often. Know each other's strengths and design your game around them.
